Abstract
As the current outbreak of Zika virus has been spreading rapidly across the world, Korea has promptly responded by designating Zika virus as a National Notifiable Infectious Diseases based on the Communicable Disease Control and Prevention Act in January 2016. To understand the trend from the newly established surveillance system, a descriptive analysis of reported cases of Zika virus infection was conducted. From January to June 4, Zika virus testing was performed for 762 persons, who traveled to the areas with local Zika virus transmission, and 5 of them had been confirmed. Since the surveillance system of Zika virus has been started, the number of reported cases kept increasing especially among those who travelled to South-East Asia (81.0%). Among these, 77 (10.1%) were pregnant women and all were negative for Zika virus. For appropriate prevention and control of Zika virus transmission, the proactive participation of health care providers in reporting the suspected cases is essential. At the same time, characteristics and trends of the reported cases should be monitored.
